Our unique science programs, featuring an inflatable whale that kids can explore from within, promise an educational journey unlike any other!
After the immersive experience with the whale, we encourage kids to go out and have an adventure in nature (we always encourage whale watching if it's close by). We also encourage kids to dream it up , and use their imagination to create something that helps our planet.
Let's make this summer an unforgettable adventure of reading, renewal, and endless curiosity! The Whalemobile brings an extraordinary science experience that perfectly aligns with this year's theme: "Read, Renew, Repeat."
We use Nile, our life-sized inflatable whale to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for conservation, protecting species, and enhancing ecosystem services.
Enrich your library's summer programs with an innovative and educational experience.
Prepare for an immersive educational journey that transcends the library's walls!
The Whalemobile team takes children inside the belly of a whale to explore the captivating world of these majestic creatures while delving into vital environmental lessons.
This program will accommodate up to 80 people and span 2 hours in the library on the program day. (20 people sign up for one of four 30-minute time slots.) There are other activities they can do after their 30 minutes in the whale.
The suggested age range is children entering 1st grade - 6th grade. This is not a program for children under 5. Younger kids have a harder time sitting still in the whale and it's sometimes disruptive to other people who are listening.
Once people reserve their spot, they will have access to our resources page. We also have a resources page for librarians that includes marketing materials, book lists, and other activities that you can make available to your patrons.
Unfortunately, this is an inside activity. Heat, wind and rain prevent us from setting it up outside, so we don't book outside programs.
The whale is an 8 ft tube that is 43 ft long (essentially.) With the flippers out, it’s about 30 ft wide, but because it’s inflatable, the flippers are flexible and can go against a wall. If the diagonal of a room is 40 ft, that will work. I usually will walk out 14 big steps to see if it will fit. The other thing is that around the tail stock, it gets smaller, so sometimes that can fit through a doorway. The flippers can go between stacks of books.
$575 plus travel. Travel is often split among libraries in the same area. You can add on extra 30-minute sessions for an additional $99 each.
"This was such an amazing experience that my son won’t stop telling anyone we see about! His favorite thing to tell people is that he got to hold a whale rib!" MW
