When most people think of The Whalemobile, they picture our life-sized inflatable humpback whale — Nile — making a splash at schools, libraries, and community events. But our mission goes beyond the “in-school field trip.” We want to give teachers the tools to keep the wonder of whales alive long after the visit.
That’s why we’ve created a set of teacher-ready resources, including a curated list of whale-themed books for grades 3–5. These aren’t just books about whales — they’re doorways into science, culture, storytelling, and stewardship.
Why books?
- They extend the Whalemobile experience into literacy, science, and SEL.
- They connect whales to NGSS standards, making them classroom-ready.
- They give students a balance of fact and imagination: nonfiction that builds knowledge and fiction that builds empathy.
We’ve organized the collection into two grade bands:
Grades 3–4 (8 books)
A mix of accessible nonfiction (like Amazing Whales! and Whales to the Rescue) and imaginative fiction (like The Snail and the Whale or The Tale of the Whale). These books are rich in visuals, text features, and student-friendly writing — perfect for teaching text structures, adaptations, and cause/effect.
Grade 5 (7 books)
Longer texts with more complexity — like Rosanne Parry’s A Whale of the Wild or Melissa Stewart’s Whale Fall. These titles push deeper into ecosystems, figurative language, and big themes like family, resilience, and conservation. Nonfiction like Asha de Vos’s Humpback Whale (Young Zoologist) anchors research projects, while fiction opens discussions about symbolism and empathy.
Each book card we’ve created includes:
- Why Teachers Might Choose It (student appeal + teacher-friendly features)
- Teaching Connections (specific NGSS, ELA skills, SEL or social studies ties)
- Teaching Resources (discussion questions, activities, and extensions)
The goal? To make it as easy as possible for teachers to pick up a whale book and immediately see how it supports their curriculum.
Because The Whalemobile is about more than one unforgettable day inside a whale. It’s about sparking lasting curiosity, helping teachers meet standards, and inspiring students to see how we’re all connected to the ocean.
