2022 - 2023: Virtual and In-Person Programs

You can tell this whale is Nile because the black line on the left side looks like the Nile River.

The Whalemobile is happy to be offering programs throughout the school year for libraries. See below for what programs are offered.

Three Different of Programs

Meet Nile, A humpback whale

Meet Nile, A humpback whale

Meet Nile, A humpback whale

FOR EVERYONE, in-person

Just like humans, whales are individual, and you will find there are more similarities between us that you think!

To start: Patrons sign up for this program (and 30-minute time slot) and receive access to our resources page. There will be a introductory video that they can watch from home before coming to the library.

Library Visit: When they come to the library for their 30-minute selected time slot, they will go inside Nile—the life-sized inflatable humpback whale, learn about how whales and humans are similar and different, and have a chance to touch baleen, teeth and bones. There will also be another station set up that patrons can interact with, play games or color pictures!

Follow up: Once they are home, they can go back to that resources page to watch a follow up video and do other activities. These can learn how to become “Playground Protectors” and make a difference for our planet—starting in their backyard!

Meet Nile, A humpback whale

FOR TEENS, virtual and in-person

Do you know a teen who is interested in having a career relating to the ocean or conservation, but they don’t know how to proceed? This is for you!

Cynde shares her story about how she took her childhood passion for whales and made it her career. She will introduce students to whales and how they are researched today illustrating that you can take many different paths to find the career that you are looking for. Science, technology, engineering/education, art and math are all critically important disciplines when addressing any topic—especially related to conservation. She will finish by sharing how this childhood passion, that many classmates of hers made fun of, led to a Guinness World Record!

virtual programs

Any of the programs that we offer can be done virtually. To see a full list, click here.

This summer, when I think of a virtual program, I think of kids gathering in the library and me on the screen in front of them. The microphone would be on and we could freely talk back and forth, perhaps with a librarian helping to support. I think this would be a great experience for children who live in an area not touched by the ocean!

" I thought it was very engaging for being virtual. The call and responses with the kids were great."  ~ participant from the 2021 summer programs.

FAQ's

SIze

The whale is an 8 ft tube that is 43 ft long (essentially.) With the flippers out, it’s about 30 ft wide, but because it’s inflatable, the flippers are flexible and can go against a wall. If the diagonal of a room is 40 ft, that will work. I usually will walk out 14 big steps to see if it will fit. The other thing is that around the tail stock, it gets smaller, so sometimes that can fit through a doorway. The flippers can go between stacks of books. Feel free to send me pictures of your space and I can tell you whether I think it will fit!

OUTSIDE VS INSIDE

I prefer to be inside, but it can be done outside. Really this is because it takes more to secure it outside, but it’s also so dependent on weather—heat, wind and rain prevent me from setting it up outside. I also need power the whole time so something to consider. I have found that other people in the libraries, although it can sometimes be in the way a little, they usually don’t mind because they see how much people are enjoying it. The blower is on the whole time, so think of a bouncy house sound.

" This was such an amazing experience that my son won’t stop telling anyone we see about! His favorite thing to tell people is that he got to hold a whale rib!" MW
