Form and Function

The program works best when we can set up in one location and have classes come to us throughout the day. A cafeteria, gym, or available classroom usually works well. We can move the activities from classroom to classroom if needed, but because one station uses water, this setup requires additional transition time between groups.

Ideally, we need two to four tables for the activity stations. Regular six-foot folding tables work perfectly. If tables aren’t available, or if there are only one or two, we can set up two of the stations on the floor as long as there is enough open space for students to work comfortably. We will also send student worksheets for the school to print before the program.

Form & Function is designed especially for fourth graders because it directly supports their study of how internal and external structures help living things survive. However, the program can benefit students at any grade level who are exploring animal adaptations, structures, and survival.

Each class participates for one hour. Students spend approximately 45 minutes rotating through the four activity stations, followed by a 15-minute group wrap-up to bring their discoveries together.
